The Digital Learning Farm

Alan November, author of Web Literacy for Educators, engages participants in a laptop journey modeling 21st century learning tools. Before tractors and combines, more than 60% of the population in North America was involved in farming. Today that number is less than 2%. Farm children made vital contributions to the family with real chores. While technology eventually eroded the meaningful work of children, we can now focus its use to restore the dignity of real work in school. All of our students can use collaborative online tools and research and global communications skills to add value to the learning community. These contributions include:

  • Tutorial Designers

  • Official Scribes

  • Researchers

  • Tool Developers

  • Collaboration Coordinators

  • Curriculum Reviewers

  • World Relations

Please share your thoughts on November's National Leadership Academy session in the comments section.

  1. We were awestruck by Alan November's presentation. His information was thought-provoking yet energizing. My colleagues and I launched a ning site during the break and lunch time. Later I created a ning site for a book study as well. I had seen Mr. November previously but this length of presentation and format allowed for much more pushing to the edge information. Thank you!

  2. Inspired by the ning and the ease of set up, I shared the technology information with another group that I work with (didn't come to the conference) and now I have the exciting prospect of getting them excited about it. We were having trouble getting meetings scheduled for discussions and the group aspect with forums is really helpful for asynchronous dialogue.
